The goal was to employ the principle of scale and depth in the following ways:

  • It had to feature two of an object, sized differently to communicate an angle.
  • A pictorial box/frame had to line the whole piece.
  • The coloring should communicate perspective (warm-to-cool or vice versa).

Extra spatial cues were allowed, if necessary.

Around this time, I was in a very Sonic mood, completing the classic games (Sonic 1 to 3 & Knuckles) time after time until I got tired. Settling on a stage that fit the warm/cool criteria wasn't too hard, though it did take some thought on which one had the smoothest progression of that color scheming.

The design of the environment isn't meant to match any part of Never Lake in particular, though I watched footage of it (i.e., the opening cutscene of Sonic CD) and closely examined it to accurately judge how to build the environment in this piece, while also using it for color and design reference.
